| The
Jewish Family Institute is named in memory of Yetta Nashman, a beloved
member of our community whose life was devoted to furthering the
positive development of Jewish families. Yetta was the co-director
of Camp Wahanowin, where she was a compassionate surrogate mother
for thousands of children for over 40 years. She gave Parent Effectiveness
Training courses, counseled families, developed programs for singles
and taught in the education department at York University. One of
The Village Shul's true partners, Yetta founded the Jewish Family
Institute, exemplifying its ideals in her loving relationship with
her husband, five children and nine grandchilderen.
The following comment from Alon Nashman, Yetta's
eldest son, speaks volumes about Yetta's impact:
"When I was looking for a life partner
Mom offered the following wisdom: 'Under-emphasize physical beauty,
wealth, intelligence and achievement; and seek out the person who
makes you love yourself.' I assume that so many people from so many
facets of her life have told me 'I love your mother,' or even 'I
wish she was my mother,' because Yetta made them love themselves
when they were with her.
